Here is a snippet, by Infinity, about ports that need to be open for router users wishing to host GMM games on Gamespy:
UDP Ports 15000-16375 need to be open. Maybe slightly fewer in this range, but not much fewer. UDP Port 8911 advertises the server on Gamespy. Not required to host, but helps get more players. UDP Port 19711 allows people to see the game has started. If not forwarded, gives people a "Waiting for host to start game" message otherwise.
This, along with detailed GMM and how to install skin instructions, will be added to the Guides section soon.
It has been brought to my attention that the file uploading script has not been working properly. I have fixed the error and all should be working well now. If you submitted a file in the past month and have not seen it added to GiantsWD yet, please submit your file(s) again and they will be added promptly.
The plans for 1.5 are not dead. We are currently working on solutions to logistical problems and will post updates on our progress.
- 9/22/04 : We have called PMS indicating our interest in preserving the game through the formulation of a new patch
- 9/23/04 : We have emailed PMS detailing our situation and stance regarding trainers (copy of email will be posted later)
- 9/28/04 : We received an email from Mr. Loeb at Planet Moon Studios acknowledging our request and stating that he would forward it to the appropriate people.
- 10/10/04 : Second email sent reminding PMS about our situation.
Loop Goose kindly pointed out to me a program that not only compresses files into every form imaginable, but does a heck of a job doing it. Testing the compression of one of Loop Goose's skies, the original zip was 1.4 MB and the 7-Zip compressed file was 700 KB. Not only does this program offer substantially better compression and faster decompressing times, it is Open Source. You can view more about the program here: http://www.7-zip.org/
This might be a wise choice for future files, considering how much space and bandwidth can be saved.
I stumbled across a topic which describes how you can export geometry and texture with Nemu, a Nintendo 64 emulator. It would be really nice to see some of the older Nintendo64 maps from Mario 64 and Zelda 64, as well as other games, be added to Giants. I might start on this project when I have more time available, but you can explore it yourself here:
Seeing as how individual news boxes relating to the release of new files are beginning to flood the main page, I am thinking about adding a section to the left column specifically for the purpose of reporting the newest 5-10 files. For example, the column would display the latest 10 maps or 10 skins, while the news section would be reserved for more general information. I will make the decision based upon your responses, so please feel free to comment about this post.
